Creating Bruno
Besides the stories about Bruno, there's another big story around Bruno: how the idea of Bruno was conceived by Pamela Todd and how the book has helped children around the world with haemophilia and other bleeding disorders.
The first three Bruno stories were inspired by a very real basset hound named 'Fred' – a special friend of Dr Pamela Todd who worked with Novo Nordisk in the UK. First, 'Fred' (aka 'Bruno') cleverly encouraged Pam to write the stories after his enthusiastic antics had helped Pam herself to convalesce after an illness. Pam's wish was that, if published, the stories would help the courageous children she had observed whilst in hospital herself.
Next, Guy Halifax, who has put the words to some of TV's most popular children's characters – such as Orm and Cheep and Bob the Builder – crafted the stories into these three enchanting tales. And Alison Boyle, renowned for her production work in publishing and for the BBC, then helped direct the book to its finished form.
Finally, award-winning (New Designer Awards 2005) young illustrator, Rebecca Samds, herself living with a bleeding disorder, brought Bruno, his friend Harry and Harry's family to life with her wonderful and very original illustrations.
Helping Children Worldwide
Both Pam and Guy kindly donated their authors' royalties so that Bruno could help haemophiliac sufferers worldwide. Also, with a substantial contribution towards the production cost by Novo Nordisk, Robinswood was able to increase the normal author royalty level.
In the UK royalties from sales have been donated to The Haemophilia Society. Royalties from sales in the rest of the world have been shared by The Haemophilia Society and the Novo Nordisk Haemophilia Foundation for their work with children in developing countries.
